CHAPTER

TEN

I stayed at the club with Sophia Doroshenko well into the night, hoping that she might divulge more information. She proved to be elusive in that regard, and eventually the conversation turned to other matters. It wasn’t a complete loss, as I walked away with more intel than I’d had when the night started.

When she wasn’t beating me up or sticking swords into me, the female vampire turned out to be decent company. Part of the job was cultivating contacts on both sides of the beat, and for some reason, Sophia had chosen to show me a small slice of her personal life. I only hoped it meant we’d stay on better terms moving forward.

As I walked her out, she made one final demand. “If this dhampirica is hunting within Austin city limits, I ask that you let me know.”

For a moment, I considered telling her about the Houldersons. Yet, this thing was personal. I felt a strong compulsion to handle it myself, and I simply couldn’t risk interference from the local coven at this juncture.

In the end, I respectfully agreed to Sophia’s request, so long as it didn’t compromise my investigation. That seemed to mollify her, and we parted on amicable terms.

On the long ride home, I reflected on what I’d learned. There were still plenty of pieces missing from the Victoria St. Pierre puzzle. As I drove, I went down the list.

Why’d she pick me? How’d she know where I’d be? Why didn’t she freak out when she tasted my serum-laced blood? What reasons did a supernatural creature have for getting close to a CERBERUS operative? What was so hush-hush about her file that it caused Strickland or whoever to lock it down?

Many unanswered questions remained, and I needed to find the answers.

When my work cell rang, the clock told me I’d only had a few hours’ sleep. I answered with all the gruffness that can be expected of a night owl who’s had their beauty sleep cut short.

“Mendoza here, speak.”

Gibbs responded, ignoring my brusque tone. “There’s been another killing. Perp matches the Rodriguez killer. And listen—the vic? It’s a federal marshal, someone from your former office.”

“Shit. Do you have a name yet?”

“Connors. Dalton Connors.”

Connors and I worked the fugitive task force together. We’d been tight until I found myself on the DIC’s shit list and got pulled from the roster. After the nightclub explosion that got me canned, he was one of the few deputies who checked in on me regularly.

Seems like the killings are getting closer to home.

“Do you need me at the scene?”

The senior agent hesitated. “Strickland wants you clear of this one. Says he wants to see you in his office first thing. Get some sleep, it looks like your team is going to have a busy day ahead.”

“Yeah. Thanks for the heads-up.”

“Eh, I felt like you should know.”

“I appreciate it. See you at the office.”

“After I get some sleep, kid. This is going to be an all-nighter.”

I ended the call and laid back
